We live in an increasingly noisy world. Noise can interfere with rest and recreation and with peace of mind. Repeated noise exposure can harm your hearing and communication – and once your hearing’s gone, it won’t come back!
Some people are exposed to hazardously loud noise in their jobs or hobbies. Noise hazard is defined by both the intensity (loudness) of the sound and the length of time you are exposed to the sound. Most noise-induced hearing loss develops slowly and insidiously during years of exposure, but explosions and impulse sounds can cause immediate damage to the hearing mechanism and hence immediate hearing impairment.
Tinnitus – annoying buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears or head – is also common in people with noise-induced hearing impairment. For some people, the tinnitus is loud and constant and more disturbing even than the hearing loss.
NOISE EXPOSURE
This rating is a guide and does not display exact sound intensity levels. As a general rule, noise levels above 85 dB cause noise damage to the auditory system after less exposure time.
120-140 dB Gun fire
120-130 dB Formula One car racing, aeroplane taking off
110-125 dB Live band/nightclub music
105-120dB Chainsaw
100 dB Whipper snipper
90-95 dB Motorbike (approx 50km/h)
85-90 dB Tractor without cab 85dBA
80-85 dB City traffic
75-85 dB Tractor with cab
60-65 dB Normal conversation
30-35 dB Quiet countryside, leaves rustling
0-15 dB Threshold of normal hearing
AT RISK GROUPS
Particular occupational groups are at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Risky industries include farming, manufacture, mining, construction and the military. Some recreational activities can also result in hearing impairment. Susceptible groups include musicians, sound technicians and roadies; DJs, bouncers and bar staff in night clubs; aerobics instructors; orchestral musicians; racing car drivers, motor cycle riders and pit crews.
Farming
Farmers are often self-employed and are at high risk for workplace injuries and accidents. Sources of hazardous noise in farming include tractors, headers and other machinery; angle-grinders and other power tools; chain saws and firearms; piggeries.
Manufacturing Industry
Many factories have high noise levels, both because of noisy machinery and because of large, reverberant areas which amplify the machinery noise. Metal stamping and grinding are amongst the most hazardous – ‘boiler-maker’s deafness’ is an old term for industrial hearing loss. Many process workers spend hours of the day exposed to high levels of noise. At the end of the day their ears are ‘numb’ and ringing.
Mining
Blasting, pneumatic drilling, digging, smelting etc. all generate high levels of noise for people working in the vicinity. You need not be the person operating the equipment to be exposed to excessive noise levels – sound carries; indoors, it reverberates and is amplified.
Construction
Construction sites are hazardous for many reasons, hence the need for advisory signs about wearing safety boots, hard hats, safety glasses and hearing protection. The noise experienced by workers from ten different building and construction trades during their working day was measured. 79% of these workers were exposed to dangerous ‘doses’ of noise. They were exposed, on average, to more than six times the safe noise dose.
Military
Training in and use of firearms and explosives exposes military personnel to hazardous impact noise. Travel in helicopters, tanks and submarines adds to the noise dose.
HEARING CONSERVATION
A complete hearing conservation program includes:
* Workplace Training – workers generally do not have a good knowledge of the particular effects of noise on their own hearing. Training can include information about the hearing mechanism, how to recognise potentially hazardous noise, the signs of early damage to the hearing mechanism, the importance of hearing protection, and the effects of hearing lo

OFFICE WORKERS EXPOSED TO DVT RISKS?
Office workers who spend long
hours at their desk may be more prone to potentially fatal blood clots
than passengers on long-haul flights, according to new research.
A
study by researcher Professor Richard Beasley of the
Medical Research Institute of
New Zealand
in Wellington found that a third of patients admitted to hospital with deep
vein thrombosis (DVT) were office workers who spent long periods at a
computer. The researchers said the problem was most common in the
information technology industry and in call-centres.
