Hiking and Camping in our Rainforests:
Our World Heritage-listed tropical rainforests are a holiday must-see. Over 900,000 hectares are a living museum where primitive plants have remained undisturbed for millions of years. Brightly coloured berries and fungi can be very attractive to children. If you don’t know what a plant is, don’t eat it! Some plants have thorns or spikes, so walk only on well-trodden tracks.
Driving & Camping in our Outback:
Our vast and remote Outback offers wildly dramatic landscapes steeped
in history and culture. In some areas camping permits may be required.
Activities on the Reef:
Nature is awesome in the biggest adventure playground of all – the Great Barrier Reef. Our Dive Industry Code of Practice is arguably the strictest of any dive industry worldwide and a trained professional will ensure your safety. There are plenty of scuba diving courses available, but first see a doctor for a “dive medical” before attempting this exciting sport. Please don’t put your feet on the reef. Select sandy areas to protect the reef and avoid coral cuts, sea urchins and other stinging reef life. Wear reef booties or shoes if you must.
Swimming at our Beaches:
Beautiful beaches along the spectacular world-renowned Great Barrier Reef are some of our most popular attractions. Follow the same general swimming safety rules that you would at home, but in tropical north Australia it is imperative to avoid Marine Stingers. Also read about Stingers First Aid & Safety.
Sightseeing at our Rivers
and Estuaries:
Tropical downpours can make driving or swimming in rain swollen rivers dangerous. Currents are often strong and the depth of water may be deceptive. Stones near water may be slippery due to moss growth, particularly around waterfalls. Don’t attempt to walk across rivers near waterfalls. Estuaries are subject to tidal movement and are breeding grounds for crocodiles. Crocodiles may also be found in freshwater lagoons, swamps and inland rivers.
Beware of Wild Animals:
Our region boasts a number of fascinating zoos and parks where you can easily enjoy the antics of an abundance of unique endemic animals. When traveling unescorted in the wilds, beware of the following:
Crocodiles require particular vigilance.
Cassowaries are large flightless birds (up to 2 metres tall!) with powerful legs and sharp claws.
Feral pigs are rarely seen but are potentially dangerous as they have no fear of man.
Snakes should be treated with caution and left alone as it is difficult to identify species. If someone is bitten, transport immediately to the nearest hospital or phone 000 for emergency assistance.
Leeches live in damp leaf litter and attach themselves to any bare flesh. Wear your socks over your trousers and apply repellent.
MOSQUITO BORNE DISEASES:
Mosquito borne diseases occur occasionally in tropical north Australia, and prevention is the best protection.

OFFICE WORKERS EXPOSED TO DVT RISKS?
Office workers who spend long
hours at their desk may be more prone to potentially fatal blood clots
than passengers on long-haul flights, according to new research.
A
study by researcher Professor Richard Beasley of the
Medical Research Institute of
New Zealand
in Wellington found that a third of patients admitted to hospital with deep
vein thrombosis (DVT) were office workers who spent long periods at a
computer. The researchers said the problem was most common in the
information technology industry and in call-centres.
